Cameron’s Brewing at Toronto International Cyclocross No Comments »

Cyclocross

This past weekend Cameron’s proudly sponsored the Toronto’s stop on the International Cyclocross circuit.  Some of North America’s top riders competed on what was a challenging, cold and wet course….which apparently are conditions that the riders prefer.

What is Cyclocross…

Cyclo-cross (sometimes cyclocross, CX, CCX, cyclo-X or ‘cross’) is a form of bicycle racing. Races take place typically in the autumn and winter (the international or “World Cup” season is September-January), and consists of many laps of a short (2.5–3.5  km or 1.5–2  mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike whilst navigating the obstruction and remount in one motion.

It’s a wild sport, combining skills from road racing, mountain biking and a ton of courage.  For more information, check out their website.

Cameron’s warmed the large crowds with pints of Auburn Ale all weekend - so much so that the last barrell of Auburn ran dry right at last call.  Good thing for some back up cases of Dark 266.

Cameron’s ‘Let’s Drink the Cask’ Thursday October 30th No Comments »

Camerons Brewing

CAMERON’S CASK NIGHT UPDATE - Last month’s Cask Night was a simple, yet delicious creation.  The cask was named L-Squared because it was a balanced mix of our Cameron’s Lager and our Dark 266 Lager and then dry hopped with a Golding Hop - one we have never used before.

The end result - a very drinkable, yet flavourful dark lager mix. This month’s Cameron’s ‘Let’s Drink the Cask Night’ will be on Thursday October 30th (devil’s night), from 6:00 - 8:00pm.

Costumes will be welcomed to this Cask Night.  There will be prizing for best costumes.  Adam at the brewery has already predicted that he will take home the top costume prize.
Don’t fret if you are coming from work and don’t have a costume, you will still be more than welcome to attend.

Cameron’s Cask Nights are a casual and intimate monthly event at the brewery. The guestlist only event is $5 for admission however, your admission covers a selection of food from Whole Foods Markets as well as a glass of the cask and two additional drink tickets.  As well, your $5 admission can be applied to a beer or swag purchase on your way out.

For those who have not been to the brewery before, this is a great chance to meet the folks behind the scenes and to tour our facility.   As well, it’s a great time to pick up some brewery fresh Cameron’s beer for the weekend.

We traditionally tap the Cask at approximately 6:15pm.

Whole Foods Markets continue to graciously donate some delicious smokehouse selections specifically made to pair with the casked brew.

As always, the event is capped at 60 people to keep it intimate and to ensure everyone gets a taste of the cask.  RSVP’s always come flooding in, so confirm your attendance as quickly as possible.

We encourage everyone to invite a guest (or a few) to join us.  Just indicate how many people will be coming with you on your RSVP.

For any questions or to RSVP (if you haven’t already), email mike@cameronsbrewing.com

The Great Escape…. 2 Comments »

Our friend Mirella Amato at www.beerology.ca just sent us this shot she took after-hours at Toronto Festival of Beer 2008. It’s few months after the fact, but incriminating none the less.

We actually got locked in and this is our escape…honestly.

Check out beerology.ca, Mirella really knows her stuff.

Cameron’s @ Volo Cask Days | High Hop Silver by The Lone Ranger No Comments »

Volo

This past weekend was Volo Cask Days…one of our favorite events of the year.

This year Cameron’s made two juicy casks.

The first was our popular Clove and Dagger -trialed and named at one of our previous Cask Nights at the brewery.

The second was an entirely new creation we called High Hop Silver - made with both our Cream Ale and our Auburn Ale (both silver medalists at the 2008 Canadian Brewing Awards) and then dry hopped.

I would like to recognize that once again Ralph at Volo has done an amazing job of presenting somewhere in the neighborhood of over 30 craft brewers in the cask format.  Hats off to you Ralph!

Although, I missed the breakfast, diving into the fine cask ales and lagers was a great

experience - so many unique varieties and flavours.

I got to see my fellow mates, share pints of great beer and play scratch and sniff with everyone’s cask beers.

Volo Cask Days is a great event and I would recommend it to

all who enjoy great, unique beers.

Visit Bar Volo @ 587 Yonge Street North, Toronto

Cheers all,

Cheers to the new brewmaster from Germany 1 Comment »

The rumors are true: At the end of a busy summer season, a renowned German brewmaster has joined the growing Barley Days Brewery in the heart of Prince Edward County. “We are glad to have found a professional with abundant education, knowledge and passion for making beer”, stated Christopher Rogers, who owns the brewery together with his wife Norah. “ When we are going to increase our volume next year, we will need an excellent full-time brewmaster who is in charge. So many people are fond of our beers, and we will not let them down.”

Jan Hinrich Rorig, brewmaster and hobby-chef, is the man who has gladly accepted the challenge. After his secondary school degree and a 3-year-apprenticeship Jan went to college in southern Germany to gather even more knowledge, and was awarded with his master craftsman diploma. For 8 years he made his way up the career ladder at the Radeberger Gruppe, Germany’s largest brewery group. At the time he left for Ontario, he was responsible for 90 brewers and an incredible annual production volume of 1.5 million hectolitres. In his free-time, he brewed his own beer and sold it in his brewpub in a small Hessian village. “What I really wanted was to go back to honest craftsmanship, and that you can only find in a small brewery”, Rorig said. “I like making beer with my own hands so much more than pressing buttons. When I heard about the growing craft brewery market in Ontario, noone could stop me from going there.”

Rorig became a brewmaster in the first place, because he asked himself as a youth how it could possibly work to turn barley and hops into beer. Fifteen years later, Jan is still fond of coming up with new answers. “Beer is the most complex food product in the world. In a single beer there are several hundred different aromas, many more than in wines, for example. To make a well-balanced beer it takes knowledge, experience and a good portion of luck. And no matter how much you know, only trial and error along with passion for detail and endless patience will get you where you want”, stated Jan. And according to him, there are many different factors that determine the unique taste of a beer, the recipe, the area where the hops were grown, the quality of the water and every piece of equipment being only some of them. “Making beer is never a Sunday afternoon walk, but when it finally tastes even better than you imagined, it is worth every effort you put into it and a thousand more”, the brewmaster said.

At the time, Rorig and the owners are busy developing ideas. “We are working on a classical Canadian Lager and are also looking forward to delighting our customers with new seasonal specialty beers”, confided Christopher Rogers. Rorig even admitted that he would love to introduce a real German wheat beer to Canada. It definitely will be worthwhile to drop by the Barley Days Brewery to see and taste the results.
